Equipment

  • Oven
  • Pan

Ingredients

  • 1 package Puff Pastry
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Milk or water

Filling

  • 2 tablespoon Butter
  • 3 Apples
  • 3 tablespoon Brown Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 tablespoon Cinnamon Grounded
  • 1 tablespoon Flour

Glaze

  • 120 g Confectioners Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • ½ teaspoon Cinnamon Grounded
  • 3-4 tablespoon Milk

Instructions

  • Remove the puff pastry from the freezer and let it thaw if necessary.
  • Start with the mis en place, meaning getting all the ingredients ready. Make sure you keep the puff pastry in the fridge till the filling is prepared as we want to keep it cool to work with.

Make the filling

  • First up you will have to prepare the filling for the toaster strudel.
  • Wash your 3 apples and dice them.
  • Put a medium sized pan on the stove and turn the heat onto medium.
Add 2 tablespoons of butter to the pan and let it melt.
  • Then add the diced apples, 3 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon of grounded cinnamon. Yes, we add a lot of cinnamon to the apples! Trust me, this is what makes the apple pie filling so good!
  • Cook everything on medium till the sugar is melted and starts turning into a caramel consistency and the apples are soft (about 10 minutes). Make sure to stir everything from time to time.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of flour and let it all cook for 1-2 more minutes and let the caramel sauce thicken.
  • Remove then pan from the heat and turn off the stove.

Prepare the toaster strudel

  • Remove the puff pastry from the fridge.
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C / 360°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicon matt.
  • Cut the puff pastry sheet into 12 equal rectangles and arrange them on your baking sheet.
  • Add 3-4 tablespoons of the apple pie filling onto half of the rectangles leaving a small border (around 1cm / 0.5 inch).
  • Brush the edges of the rectangles with some milk or water using a kitchen brush. This will help the puff pastry to properly seal so none of the filling comes out while baking.
  • Next put the other rectangles on top of the ones with the filling.
  • Using a fork press the sides of the rectangles down to seal them completely.
  • If desired, lightly brush the pastry with an egg wash. Simply whisk 1 egg with 1 tablespoon of milk or water and brush it over the dough using a kitchen brush.
  • Bake at 180°C / 360°F for 15-25 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown.

Make the glaze

  • While the toaster strudels are baking, prepare the glaze.
Simply add 120 grams of confectioners sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon grounded cinnamon and 3 tablespoons of milk to a small bowl and whisk it together. If your glaze is still to thick add an additional tablespoon of milk.

Serve

  • Remove the toaster strudels from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before drizzling them with the homemade cinnamon glaze.
    Serve warm and enjoy!
